CORRECTED POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: Possible Spring Semester 2010 TA positions for continuing (must be currently attending UW-Madison) graduate students for the following two Gender and Women’s Studies courses: GWS 102: Women, Social Institutions, and Social Change (up to two possible positions at 47.78%). Course description: 3 cr. Introduction to major issues & social problems related to women through an interdisciplinary analysis of social institutions & movements for social change as they affect women. Primary focus on 20th century trends in such institutions as the family, law, medicine, education, the economy, and politics. Elementary level; social science credit. GWS 103: Women and Their Bodies in Health and Disease (one position open at 47.78% = 4 discussions sections). Course description: 3 cr. Basic facts about the structure and functioning of the female body. Attention is paid to the adjustments that organ systems make during pathological events (stress, exercise, eating, menstruation, sexual/reproductive activity, and aging) and during pathological or disease processes. The effects on the body of environmental and psychological factors will be described. The relationships between women patients, health professionals and available treatment and diagnostic modalities will be discussed. Elementary level; natural science credit. All positions determined by the Spring TA budget. Duties include: attending lectures, leading discussion sessions and grading. Expertise in Gender and Women’s Studies (coursework preferred) & a high level of competence in home discipline required.
